Big news from Comic-Con 2012 on the BBC series MERLIN (which also airs in American on Syfy) as it enters its fifth season.

While speaking to the press, Angel Coulby who plays Queen Guinevere Pendragon on the series (and is also making her first Comic-Con appearance), says MERLIN Season 5 is getting much darker in the new season.

“It feels much more adult,” says Coulby. “I think they’ve pushed the boundaries each time with each series and it’s gotten darker and darker. We know a huge amount of our audience is adults and we can be more ambitious with the darker side so it’s interesting to play.”

Cult Fix has it on good authority that Merlin will return to British TV screens late September on BBC1.

The fifth series of the show is currently planned to air on Saturday 29 September, a week after Doctor Who concludes the first batch of episodes from its seventh series.

Once again there will be 13 new Merlin episodes in the run and it is expected to air uninterrupted, finishing shortly before Christmas.

Note, BBC broadcast dates are obviously still subject to change up until around two weeks before broadcast.

Now finishing its fourth season, BBC One and Syfy Channel’s Merlin has been a widely accepted, family-oriented fantasy show about the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable. What sets Merlin apart from most other television and theatrical versions of the King Arthur legend is that it’s told from the perspective of a young Merlin, the wizard who becomes Arthur’s best friend and confidant.

Another thing that sets Merlin apart is its use of a biracial Guinevere “Gwen” (played by Angel Coulby), who begins as a servant to Lady Morgana (Katie McGrath), is caught up in a love triangle between Lancelot (Santiago Cabrera) and Prince Arthur (James Bradley), and will eventually become King Arthur’s wife and the Queen of Camelot.
